Dachshund

standard dachshundSometimes called a “wiener dog” or “sausage dog” due to its elongated shape, the Dachshund (also known as “Doxie”) is the sixth most popular breed in the U.S.

The breed may have originated in ancient Egypt.

Personality

  • Outgoing, playful and alert
  • Energetic and entertaining
  • Intelligent but stubborn
  • Love being around people
  • Can be a jealous dog
  • Love to chase animals, balls, etc.

Size

  • Miniature is up to 11 pounds and stands around 5 inches at the withers (shoulder)
  • Standard is 16-32 pounds and 7-10 inches at the withers

Lifestyle

  • Good as a first pet
  • Does well with children if introduced as puppies
  • Suited to apartment living
  • Suited to travel

Training

  • Patience is needed to train this often strong-willed little dog
  • They like to bark, so firm training is needed to discourage this if it is a problem
  • Firmness and consistency is needed, along with gentleness so they don’t become timid

Exercise

  • A short daily walk is sufficient, as these short-legged dogs tire easily
  • Vigorous running and jumping should be avoided since their backs can be injured

Coat

  • Short and smooth, wirey or long
  • Can be one or two-colored; common colors are red and black-tan
  • Wire-haired and long-haired Dachshunds need daily brushing; their fur should be checked for mats and burs if they are allowed to roam outside

Health

  • May experience spinal problems due to their long spine and short legs
  • Avoid obesity as extra weight will put strain on their vulnerable backs
  • Their long ears mean regular cleaning is necessary to avoid infections and inflammation
  • Other common health problems include genetic eye diseases, skin problems, hyperthyroidism and obesity

Lifespan

  • 12-14 years
