Akita
Large and courageous, Akitas are a breed of working dogs that originated in Japan. Akitas are popular show dogs, and are also widely used as therapy dogs.
According to the American Kennel Club, Akitas are a national monument in their native country of Japan. When children are born in Japan, the family is given an Akita statue that represents long life, health and happiness.

Training
- Skillful and strong willed, the Akita needs training as a puppy to establish its owner as the pack leader
- Without proper training, the Akita will consider itself the leader of the house and may show aggression toward other family members
Exercise
- Need daily exercise, such as runs on the beach or long walks around the neighborhood
- Playtime in a backyard makes the Akita happy
Coat
- Any color, including white, brindle or pinto
- Double-coated; require a daily brushing
- Bathe only when necessary, as shampoo will remove the Akita’s natural waterproof coating
Health
- Because of their large stature, Akitas are prone to hip dysplasia and knee problems
