Australian Shepherd
Australian Shepherds are herding dogs that, despite their name, were developed in the United States.
Aussies have loads of energy, make great watchdogs and are very easy to train.
Personality
- Active, high-energy and versatile
- Intelligent and loyal
- Friendly and affectionate, forming deep bonds
- Good-natured and easy-going
- Sometimes reserved
Size
- 40-65 pounds
- 18-23 inches at the withers (shoulder)
Lifestyle
- Suited to a physically active pet parent
- Needs a yard to run in
- Will guard their surroundings and be protective
- Good with children, though may try to herd them by nipping at their heels
Training
- Very easy to train
- Can do well in obedience competitions
- Need to be well socialized as puppies, since they can be shy around strangers
Exercise
- Australian Shepherds have lots of energy, so they need a lot of exercise
- As herding dogs, they especially enjoy exercise with a purpose or being given a task
- They may nip at your heels when exercising and playing because of their herding instincts
- Do well at dog sports like agility, Frisbee, flyball, obedience, etc.
- Will become destructive if not exercised enough
Coat
- Medium-length coat may be straight or wavy
- Colors include black, red, blue merle or red merle; white markings are common
- Waterproof double coat provides good insulation
- Average shedder
- Need occasional brushing and bathing only when dirty
Health
- Can be prone to eye problems, skin allergies, respiratory problems, hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism

- 12-14 years
