Bichon Frise

bichon friseYou may recognize these white powder puffs with legs as clown dogs from the circus! In fact, they originated in France, where they were performing circus dogs.

The Bichon’s name is derived from Barbichon, the Barbet or Water Spaniel from which the breed descended.

Bichon Frise are a lively breed and love being part of the family. They only need moderate exercise but regular grooming.

Personality

  • The liveliest of toy breeds, Bichons are as fun and sweet-tempered as their adorable looks suggest
  • Extroverts who are greatly playful, affectionate and happy
  • Ideal companion dogs; loyal and non-aggressive

Size

  • 7-12 pounds
  • 9.5-11.5 inches at the withers (shoulders)

Lifestyle

  • Like to be included in all activities
  • Adaptable to either the country or the city
  • Best for families with older children as they tend to act like little children themselves
  • Competitive for toys and affection; thus not suitable for young children
  • Good breed for allergy sufferers
  • Travel well

Training

  • Lively, frisky dog that responds best to patient, consistent training

Exercise

  • Moderate energy
  • Adaptable to an active lifestyle
  • Happy to be a lap dog or to go on a long walk
  • Daily spurts of energy where they race around playing with anyone and anything in their path

Coat

  • Generally all white, but apricot markings are common
  • Creates a powder-puff appearance since it stands off the body when clean and brushed
  • Soft, dense undercoat and coarser, curlier outercoat
  • Velvety feel to the touch; springs back when patted

Care

  • Daily brushing and professional monthly grooming are required to keep the coat untangled and soft
  • Can develop tearing stains that leave red marks under their eyes; to prevent this, eye wipes should be used regularly
