The Boston Terrier is the official state dog of Massachusetts, but these dogs are loved all over the world for their affectionate, gentle nature.

Personality

• Gentle and well-mannered
• Loyal and protective
• Alert and intelligent
• Playful and friendly
• May snore and drool

Size

• 15-25 pounds
• 14-15 inches at the withers (shoulder)

Lifestyle

• Suited to apartment life
• Tolerant with children and the elderly
• Gets along with other pets
• May be dominant toward other dogs

Training

• Enjoys learning
• Does not respond well to a harsh tone
• Can be difficult to housetrain

Exercise

• Needs regular walks, but does not like long walks
• Enjoys playtime

Coat

• Short, smooth and shiny
• Black and white is the most common; may also be brindle and black or brindle and white
• Brush with a firm-bristle brush
• Average shedder

Care

• Avoid overheating when exercising
• Take care they don’t injure their protruding eyes
• Wipe eyes with a cloth daily
• Clean ears regularly and check for foreign bodies

Health

• Common health problems include breathing difficulties, birthing difficulties, skin tumors, eye injuries and cherry eye

• 14-16 years
