Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles SpanielCavalier King Charles Spaniels are charming little dogs that are well suited to families, including children and the elderly.

An excellent lap dog, this toy breed originated in the UK, where it was a favorite (and namesake) of King Charles II of England.

Personality

  • Friendly, sweet-natured and an ideal companion pet
  • Have the confidence of their larger Spaniel cousins

Size

  • 12-18 pounds
  • 9-13 inches at the withers (shoulders)

Lifestyle

  • Well-mannered enough for both children and elderly adults
  • Happy to be part of a large family or with a single pet parent, as long as they are included in activities as much as possible

Training

  • Will learn basic commands with a steady, consistent approach at a young age

Exercise

  • Enjoys being a lapdog but also needs a vigorous on-leash walk as well as playtime at the local dog run or park, since they love to socialize

Coat

  • Four recognized colors: Blenheim (the popular white with red patches/markings); tricolor (white with black-and-tan markings); black and tan; and ruby (solid red coat)
  • Their long, glossy coat requires a quick daily brushing to keep it untangled and free from odor
  • Their under-eye area should also be cleaned daily to prevent “tear stains” or red marks left from tear secretion

Health

  • Although Cavaliers are a long-lived breed and generally healthy, they can be prone to a heart condition called mitral valve disease, as well as syringomyelida (a brain and spine disease that can cause anything from discomfort to partial paralysis)
  • Can also be genetically inclined to hip dysplasia and eye problems

Lifespan

  • 9-14 years
