Flat-Coated Retriever
Nicknamed “Flatties,” Flat-Coated Retrievers originated in England in the 19th century, where they were popular as a retriever on both land and water.
Flat-Coated Retrievers are social and happy dogs. They are thought to be a mix of Newfoundlands and Labrador Retrievers.
Personality
- Lively, friendly, intelligent, active and social
- This breed is always optimistic and happy
- Fondly known as “eternal puppies,” Flatties have a very slow maturity rate and often stay in an excited, energetic puppy state for years
Size
- 60-70 pounds
- 22-24 inches at the withers (shoulders)
Lifestyle
- Great companion for those with an active lifestyle; no matter the weather, they need lots of daily exercise and activity
- Excellent with children, although given their exuberance and size, they are better suited for a home with no children under 10 or elderly adults
- Do best in the suburbs or country where they can frolic in the yard and go on long country walks
- Get along well other dogs and animals
- Need to be included and not left alone too much or they will be destructive and/or hyperactive
- Given their over-friendliness they do not make the best of watchdogs; they will likely lick a stranger to death
Training
- Wonderfully enthusiastic students who are always eager to please
- Early socialization with strangers is important as they can be apprehensive toward those they don’t know
- Positive, firm-but-gentle, reward-based training always works
Exercise
- This energetic breed is the perfect match for a hiker, jogger or biker
- Swimming and playing fetch should be a frequent part of their activities
- If they are not physically or mentally stimulated enough, they can be extremely destructive
Coat
- Slightly shaggy and water resistant
- Rich brown or black
- Should be brushed two to three times per week to keep it shining and clean
Health
- Can be genetically inclined to hip dysplasia, osteosarcoma, epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma and kneecap dislocation
Lifespan
- 10-14 years
Rescue
- The Flat-Coated Retriever Society of America has a rescue and referral program to help you find an adoptable Flattie
