Great Dane

Sweet-tempered Great Danes are often called “gentle giants.” They are friendly, spirited, courageous and easy-going – but as puppies, they’re sometimes exuberant and clumsy.

Personalitygreat dane

  • Sweet-tempered, often called a “gentle giant”
  • Friendly, spirited, and courageous
  • Dependable and loving
  • Easy-going, but usually exuberant as a pup
  • Strong-willed and majestic

Size

  • 100-175 pounds
  • 30-36 inches at the withers (shoulder)

Lifestyle

  • Gentle and loving, Danes are devoted family dogs that have enormous bonds to humans
  • Wonderful with children, but because of their size they should be closely monitored because a Dane can unintentionally harm a child
  • The Great Dane’s size makes him an intimidating guard dog, but Danes know to differentiate between welcomed and unwelcomed guests
  • Great Danes should be kept indoors and close to their families, and will grow frustrated if left outside all day
  • Will do well in an apartment, but needs plenty of exercise past the age of one

Training

  • Easily trained and extremely obedient
  • Because of their size, Great Danes need a clear guide and a sufficient amount of training, but very little is needed to get them on the right path

Exercise

  • Great Danes need moderate amounts of exercise
  • A simple walk or game of fetch for 20 or so minutes will do them much good before the age of one
  • They grow at such large speeds that it’s important not to over-exercise them before the age of one as it can lead to strain and developmental problems

Coat

  • Short-length coat
  • Colors include fawn, black, blue, brindle, harlequin, and mantle
  • Thick and clean coat with a smooth glossy appearance
  • Average shedder
  • Short coat is easy to groom and should be maintained since bathing these gentle giants is quite an experience; consistent grooming can reduce how often a Dane must be bathed

Care

  • Needs to be included in the family activities
  • Everything comes in a larger size; including fences, crates, feeders, etc.
  • Danes are incredibly sensitive and must have human interaction and love

Health

  • Great Danes are prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, tumors, heart disease and tail injuries

Lifespan

  • 8-10 years (rarely may live to be 10-13 years old)
