Havanese
Personality
- Outgoing, intelligent, responsive dogs that are ideal companions
- Despite the long popularity of the Havanese in its native Cuba, it wasn’t until the1990’s that the Havanese became a fashionable dog in the US
- A wonderful family dog that has an affinity to children
Size
- 7-13 pounds
- 8.5-11.5 inches a the withers (shoulders)
Family and Home
- A family dog that enjoys the company of children; however, children must always be supervised with a dog and taught to be both kind and respectful towards the animal
- Ideal for someone who can give the affection he likes to give and receive; desires constant companionship
Training and Exercise
- As the Havanese were once used in circuses, they are ready and willing to learn obedience training and then proudly show off what they have learned
- They respond best to gentle training and will become upset with harsher methods
- One of the easier toy breeds to train
- One hour of on-leash walking as well as plenty of playtime is ideal
Coat
- Can be any combination of white, black, chocolate, gray, silver, apricot and beige
- Daily brushing with a wire comb keep hair untangled and non-matted
- Hair above the eyes needs to be cut or pulled back so the Havanese can see
- Professional grooming every 6-8 weeks is necessary to keep coat healthy; an unhealthy coat will be both painful and medically unsound for the dog
Care
- Aside from daily grooming the Havanese simply requires company; without it they will likely have separation anxiety
Health
- This is a rugged little breed; possible inherited health issues are eye problems including cataracts, liver shunts, thyroid issues and kneecap dislocation
Lifespan
- 12-14 years
Rescue
- Havanese Rescue is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing Havanese that are homeless or in shelters and finding them new homes.
