Keeshond
The Keeshond (pronounced “Kayz-hond”) is a social dog who loves being involved in family activities, but can be difficult to train.
This breed (the plural is Keeshonden) is popular in the U.S. and U.K., but called the Wolfspitz in Europe.
Personality
- Social dog who loves life and the people in it
- Good with children
- Looks like they are always “smiling”
Size
- 35-40 pounds
- 16-19 inches at the withers (shoulders)
Lifestyle
- Keeshonden reflect the family they live in; a Keeshond in a boisterous family will likely mimic that behavior
- This breed revels in being part of family activities
- Ideal in calm, stable families where their sweet disposition can bloom
Training
- Keeshonden have a mind of their own and will not respond well to straight-forward training
- Innovative, fun, reward-based training works best for this social breed
Exercise
- Require average amount of exercise (daily walks)
- Would rather take part in family activities then dog activities
Coat
- Dense, thick coat requires weekly brushing with a stiff, bristle brush
- Requires extra brushing during bi-annual molting
- A matted or knotted coat is painful for the dog and must be shaved
- Monthly professional grooming is suggested
Care
- Keeshonden, like many dogs, love their food and can become obese if it is not controlled with proper diet and exercise
- Like most Spitz dogs, they have a mind of their own, so proper mental and physical stimulation will keep a Keeshond occupied and content
- Keeshonden need company and do not do well alone for long periods of time
Health
- Healthy, sturdy breed that can be prone to dysplasia
- Can suffer from skin and flea allergies which can be prevented by keeping the dog’s coat healthy, unmated and clean
Lifespan
- 12-14 years
Rescue
- Keeshond Rescue of North America is an all-volunteer dog rescue group dedicated to helping Keeshonden in need of re-homing and rehabilitation.
