Papillon

papillon dogWith wing-like ears that look like the butterflies they’re named after, Papillons are a playful and obedient breed. The breed originated in Spain, where they were the ultimate lap dogs.

Papillons are small but hardy, and do well in agility contests. They are fairly healthy but need daily grooming.

Personality

  • Playful, sweet, good-natured and obedient
  • For generations, the Papillon has been bread to be a loving companion dog

Size

  • 4-9 pounds
  • 8-11 inches at the withers (shoulders)

Lifestyle

  • Papillons were meant to be companion dogs and need to be around their owner and family as much as possible
  • They are fine for families with older children or elderly parents, but not suited for young children, given their tiny, breakable frames
  • Busy-bodied by nature, Papillons thrive being a part of the action

Training

  • Paps are highly intelligent and respond well to consistent, gentle obedience training
  • Considered one of the more “trainable” toy breeds
  • Like most small dogs they must be trained and socialized so they do not “yap” at big dogs

Exercise

  • Papillons do fine with short walks but will also adapt to a more active lifestyle
  • Two Papillons are often better than one because they will occupy and play with one another until exhausted

Coat

  • Coats are white with black, red or brown spots or tri-colored
  • Requires a small amount of daily brushing to keep coat silky and soft

Health

  • A healthy and long-living breed
  • Inherited problems can include knee dislocation and eye problems

Lifespan

  • 12-15 years
