Pembroke Welsh Corgi

CorgiWith their distinctive short legs and long body, Pembroke Welsh Corgis were originally a herding dog.

Corgis still enjoy herding activities, often “rounding up” children!

Personality

  • Intelligent and loyal
  • Devoted and protective
  • Playful, active and bold
  • Tolerant and sensitive
  • Sometimes stubborn
  • Very vocal
  • Good watchdog
  • May be possessive and aggressive
  • Bond well with children

Size

  • 25-35 pounds
  • 10-12 inches at the withers (shoulder)

Lifestyle

  • Better suited to older children
  • Does well in an apartment, but will be active indoors

Training

  • Corgis do well at obedience
  • Intelligent and learn easily
  • Socialize well as puppies to avoid possessiveness
  • Gentle training works best with Corgis
  • May need training to discourage them nipping at your heels (a herding instinct)

Exercise

  • Daily exercise is required
  • Corgis enjoy herding and having a task to complete

Coat

  • Dense, weather-resistant double coat
  • Medium length
  • Red, sable, fawn, or black and tan
  • With or without white markings
  • Sheds twice a year

Care

  • Take care not to overfeed, as excessive weight will put a lot of strain on your Corgi’s back
  • Bathe as necessary
  • Minimal brushing required
  • Needs attention and loves being part of the family

Health

  • Corgis are susceptible to obesity, cervical disk disease, von Willebrand disease, and progressive retinal atrophy lens luxation

Lifespan

  • 14-16 years
