Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu originated in China, and is one of the oldest breeds. Characterized by their long, flowing coat and lively personality, they also make good watchdogs.

- 9-16 pounds

Home Life
- Good for families with older children
- Good for the elderly

Training
- Needs consistent, patient training
- May be difficult to housebreak
Exercise
- Have good stamina and enjoy long walks
- Will be active indoors, but also benefit from regular walks
Coat
- Long and dense, double coat
- Can come in any color or color combination
- Needs daily grooming to avoid matting
- Coats can be trimmed for ease of care
- Face hair is usually tied back
- Small amount of shedding
- Considered hypoallergenic
Care
- Area around eyes needs daily cleaning with warm water and cotton
- Sensitive to high temperatures
- Avoid overfeeding as Shihs become fat easily
- Regular teeth care by your vet, as they lose teeth easily
Health
- Can suffer from corneal ulcers, respiratory problems, spinal disc disease, kidney disease and luxating patella
Lifespan
- 14-16 years

- The American Shih Tzu Club has a national welfare and rescue committee that helps homeless Shih Tzus
