Hotel Maya and i Love Dogs Co-hosting Another Mojitos & Mutts

After our successful first Mojitos & Mutts at Long Beach’s Hotel Maya in June, we’re ready for Round 2 on July 28. All the elements that go into making a Mojitos & Mutts fun will be there: cool people, party-friendly pooches, great scenery, yummy food, and, of course, animal lovers coming together for a great cause.

Last time, Mojitos & Mutts benefitted Long Beach Animal Care Services’ “A Toy for Every Animal” program. We asked attendees to bring a new KONG toy and those donations have been generously matched by the KONG Company!

This time, we’re doing an “L.A. for LA” benefit. Usually we try to keep our fundraising efforts local so we can support the community, but the oil spill in the Gulf is everyone’s problem. So we decided to help out our fellow animal lovers in the South.

As we recently reported, one of the side effects of the oil spill was the loss of jobs to the local fishing industry, which means a lot of people were being forced to surrender beloved pets to shelters. In response, the Louisiana SPCA (LA/SPCA), which was experiencing a huge population spike at its shelter, started a program called the Gulf Coast Companion Animal Relief Program in conjunction with the ASPCA and Best Friends Animal Society. The program is designed to provide short-term financial relief to pet parents so they can keep their animals at home where they belong. The program covers such expenses as spay/neuter surgeries, pet food, heartworm treatment, microchipping and basic examinations.

Having to give up a pet is heartbreaking enough, but it’s also been proven that animals have a positive impact on the physical and mental health of humans, which is yet another reason to keep families together at this time of crisis!

At Mojitos & Mutts, we’ll hold raffles for fun stuff, and take donations for money. We’ll also take toys (so dogs waiting for their forever homes can have something to play with). Everything we receive will go directly to the LA/SPCA and the Gulf Coast Companion Animal Relief Program.

As always, Mojitos & Mutts is a dog-friendly event so feel free to bring your best friends along with you to Hotel Maya. Pup-Peroni is generously providing the doggie treats. Other cool goodies will be provided by FIDO Friendly magazine and Worldwise.

So c’mon L.A. and surrounding areas—LA needs a helping hand and we’re the dog lovers to do it!
