Pit Bull Heroes Save Chihuahua from Coyote Attack

chihuahua and pit bullPEOPLEPets.com. “I instantly knew that an animal got him.”

Robinette saw the coyote with Buster in its mouth, shaking the dog as he ran away. She started chasing the coyote down the street.

“And then, I see the coyote at the very middle of this field drop my dog,” she told 7News. A neighbor’s two Pit Bulls had followed her and bolted toward the coyote, which ran off when it saw them.

“The pits followed my dog underneath a bush, guarding him,” Robinette said. “[They] lay next to him, licked him and protected him.” She rushed Buster to a local animal hospital, where the gravely injured dog was treated for pain and shock. He underwent surgery on August 2 to repair damage to his chest wall.

Buster’s vet, Dr. Lee Bregitzer, said the pooch is well on the way to recovery, thanks to his four-legged neighbors. They were “guardian angels for her dog,” Dr. Bregitzer said, “disguised as Pit Bulls.”

Robinette is extremely grateful for the dogs. “[They] were looking out for Buster’s best interest against the coyote,” she told PEOPLEPets.com. “They were looking out for my dog.”

Buster – and his guardian angels – are very fortunate to live in Littleton. In nearby Denver, Pit Bulls are banned.

Why are Pit Bulls banned? Banning a dog breed shows an ignorance that is so staggering only a politician could of thought it up. There are no bad dogs just bad owners. This is a great story of animal heroes.

Thank you all for your comments! I wish the mainstream media would cover positive Pit Bull stories like this one. Ray, I don’t understand why Pit Bulls, or any breeds, are banned, either. Breed-specific legislation has proven to be unsuccessful almost everywhere it’s enforced. It’s time for those who support breed bans to realize it’s the deed, not the breed and, yes, make the owners responsible.

Wow, what a fantastic story! Us humans can learn so much from dogs!

Yeah Pitties are good dogs. Unfortunately there reputation as fierce fighters has made them popular with the wrong kind of people. You see evidence of this in animal shelters and chained up in yards everywhere you go. Dogs are pack animals and want to be with there pack and to be loved. neglect and abuse are a recipe for a dangerous animal, despite this 90% or more of Pit Bulls in shelters are sweet as can be. We need to start rehabilitating the animals and euthanize the owners… Keep it Wild!

I forgot to mention. Yes breed specific legislation is not only wrong it is a state sanctioned hate crime. Everyone needs to get involved with getting this ridiculous legislation stopped. write your city council and go to the city council meetings and make your voice heard. I don’t have my website set up yet but you can find a lot of great stories like this one and info on BSL breed specific legislation at Pitties On the web Positive press here http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/

I agree with breed specific legislation. What other breed besides pit bulls are BRED in their blood and genes to KILL?

@Sarah: I am all for Idiot Specific Legislation. You’re a moron who doesn’t know the first thing about the breed.

What kind of ignorant jerk bashes the type of dog that just saved the life of another creature? Have YOU put yourself in between a coyote and a companion lately? These two dogs have more loyalty and compassion in one toe than you do in your entire body. Maybe you’re just envious that they’re more empathetically developed than you.

For the record, MOST terriers were bred to “kill” – from Dachshunds to Wirehaired Terriers. APBTs were bred to be animal aggressive, NOT human aggressive. Anyone who knows the first thing about dogs knows that human and animal aggression are two completely separate things.

Look up the breed’s temperament scores at atts.org. They score higher than many other “family dogs” that don’t deal with the hatred espoused by dunces like yourself. Hope you never need a search and rescue, service, or therapy dog since more than a fair few of these dogs are APBTs. I bet you think that “lock jaw” is a fact, too.

Do you think aggression is isolated to one breed? Labs, Shepherds, and even Pomeranians have caused fatal injuries to people. http://tinyurl.com/2byqpgp http://tinyurl.com/mf5sj5 http://tinyurl.com/2velmu2

If you want to be educated on the matter (which I doubt you do), you can find “The Pit Bull Placebo” online here: http://tinyurl.com/np9q4u Far more people die as a result of vehicular crashes every week than people do from dog attacks in years, but we don’t ban driving.

If you think only one breed or type of dog is aggressive or dangerous, I can pretty much assure you that you WILL get bitten at one point or another. ANY creature that has teeth can bite and acting as though one kind of dog is “inherently dangerous” and another type is “bombproof” is a potentially fatal error.

Step away from the computer and go do some actual research on the matter before you post. I hope you don’t have a dog because understanding basic canine behavior is clearly beyond you. There should be competency tests for people wanting to be dog owners – dogs need to be protected from idiots. Save for neurological or defects from inbreeding, aggressive incidents with dogs are 95+% due to human error.

    Have a beautifully ignorant day!

    Signed,
Someone who owns and fosters dogs responsibly and knowledgeably

@Sarah: One more thing that responsible dog owners/handlers know, even terriers can be well socialized with other dogs provided they have a knowledgeable person guiding them.

Just because APBTs (and all other terriers) CAN be animal aggressive doesn’t mean they WILL be – just look at this case and Google Weela the APBT while you’re at it. Rather than voicing agreement for legislation that would put many canine heroes to DEATH, you can get a few facts into your dense skull.

Unfortunately it’s a popular misconception that Pit Bulls are bred to be vicious…but fortunately, that misconception is slowly going away. For example, in Ohio, a bill was recently passed that would remove the label “vicious” from being automatically applied to any Pit Bull (the story: http://www.ilovedogs.com/2010/05/ohio-house-drops-%e2%80%9cvicious%e2%80%9d-label-for-pit-bulls/).

I own several APBT and can testify to there fierce loyalty and companionship as well as being the BEST family dogs I have ever had. They play gentle with our little dogs and rough with our big dog. They adjust to everyones needs in the house.
