Can My Boxer Puppy Eat Venison?

Hi!

Is it safe to give Boxer puppies deer meat?

—Melinda

Hi Melinda,

Thank you for your question.

All dogs are omnivores that lean toward the carnivorous side, so it is very important that meat is part of their diet. If you are to give a puppy deer meat, I’d run it by the vet who is overseeing the puppy’s care first. If the meat is drastically different from their existing diet, then it could cause vomiting, diarrhea, or other gastrointestinal illnesses.

Venison is a common ingredient in “novel” protein diets used to help treat skin and gastrointestinal food sensitivities. This style of feeding is not appropriate for all dogs, so make sure to do a dietary change under the guidelines of your veterinarian.

Good luck.
