Baltic the Dog Returns to the Sea

You may remember last January when a shivering, black and brown dog nicknamed “Baltic” was rescued off of a block of ice in the Baltic Sea.

The story received a massive amount of press coverage because of the courage and compassion of the people who saved him.

Well, guess what? Baltic is sailing the high seas again, but this time he’s traded in his block of ice for a boat.

After being adopted by the crew of ocean researchers including ship mechanic Adam Buczynski, the man who rescued him, Baltic has been happily living on the Baltica as part of the crew.

Last year, the public watched spellbound as the soaking-wet pooch kept plunging into the water over and over while being rescued.

At one point the crew watched in horror as Baltic was swept under the boat, only to appear on the other side and climb back up onto a block of ice. After his dramatic rescue, you could see a very wet and exhausted furball get dried off and slowly come back to life.

Life is very different these days for Baltic. He spends his days running around the ship, sitting in the captain’s brig and munching on homemade dinners from the crew. Baltic enjoys his new home, but still gets nervous when the weather gets rough, according to the Associated Press.

Despite his fears, Baltic sails out with the crew, enjoys the salty air and sometimes stares out to sea, perhaps reminiscing about how he almost got called to Davey Jones’ Locker.
