Charming Chewie Could Be Your Chum

Chewie the chocolate Labrador

Chewie

It’s not what you’re thinking. “Chewie” did not earn his name because he likes to eat things.

Nope, Chewie is short for Chewbacca, the “Star Wars” character whose voice this 3-year-old, chocolate Labrador Retriever loves to imitate.

Chewie is currently being fostered through Labrador Retriever Rescue (LRR), an all-volunteer group based in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area. His foster mom says the sweet-natured Lab is neutered, housebroken, crate trained and knows most basic commands.

Chewie was brought to LRR because his family had a baby and a busy work schedule, which left them little time for their pooch. Now this laid-back, good-looking fella needs a new furever family to give him the attention he deserves.

About the only thing that isn’t perfect about Chewie is his chapped nose. But LRR assures that with just a few applications of lip balm each day, before you know it, his schnoz will be as black and shiny as new.

Every Friday, i Love Dogs spotlights a homeless dog as part of our i Love Dogs Rescue Network effort to find furever homes for these pooches.

I chose Chewie because years ago, my own dog Larry was affectionately called “Chewbacca” by the staff at his veterinarian’s office. If Chewie is one-tenth as sweet as Larry, you’re in for a treat. The i Love Dogs breed spotlight just happens to be shining on the Labrador Retriever this month, so why not bring one of these lovable pooches into your home?

The 4 (Paws)-1-1:

  • Name: Chewie (short for Chewbacca; also responds to Chew Toy, Choo Choo, Chews and, when he sneezes, Ah-Chooey)
  • Breed: Chocolate Labrador Retriever
  • Age: 3 years old
  • Personality: Calm, well-behaved and a very good listener
  • Contact: To adopt Chewie, visit the Labrador Retriever Rescue website for details about the adoption process, or call their “Lab Line” at 301-868-3524. Chewie can only be adopted by a resident of the greater Washington, D.C., area.

If you or someone in your social network becomes a hero by adopting one of our featured dogs, not only will you get a best friend for life, but if you mention that you saw the dog on our website, i Love Dogs will send you a pooch starter kit, including toys, vitamin samples and other goodies!
