HOLLYWOOF REPORTER: Uggie, Michael Phelps and Hilary Swank

This week’s Hollywoof Reporter has the pooch scoop on these celebrities and their dogs:

Uggie Leaves His Paw Prints at Grauman’s

UggieNow that “The Artist” has made it to DVD this week, its stars are back in the headlines. On Monday, Uggie, the lovable Jack Russell Terrier we’ve all come to know, became the first dog to leave his paw prints in the cement at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. (Or is it now Hollywoof?)

According to Reuters, Uggie looked pawsh when he sank his paws in cement in a ceremony that also marked his retirement from the movies. Uggie’s trainer said the 10-year-old canine will enjoy his retirement and appear at charity events.

“Everybody thinks I am great trainer. I don’t think so. I think he is just a great dog,” Omar von Muller said at the paw print ceremony, thanking Uggie’s fans and his thousands of followers on Twitter and Facebook.

“The Artist” won five Oscars, including best picture, in February. Fans wanted Uggie nominated for an acting Academy Award in his own right, but the pooch was ineligible under rules that say acting awards can only go to humans.

Michael Phelps Wants to Teach His Adopted Dog to Swim

Michael Phelps dogsThe London Summer Olympic games are just around the corner, which means that everyone’s favorite Gold Medalist swimmer, Michael Phelps, is back in the news.  According to the “TODAY” show blog, Phelps fell hopelessly in love with a shelter dog named Penelope, who was featured on the show’s “Bow To Wow” segment.

Phelps was scheduled to talk about his Olympic training on the show that day, but ended up walking Penelope out onto the plaza. He decided to adopt the Catahoula mix after the segment had ended and has been tweeting about her ever since.

Phelps renamed Penelope to Stella and has introduced her to his other dog, Herman. The swimmer tweets updates about his happy dogs regularly and even insists that Stella is going to learn to how to swim soon so she can spend time with her dog dad in the water. Awwwwww!

Hilary Swank Starts New Dog Foundation

Hilary Swank, Michele ObamaOscar-winning actress Hilary Swank has made it a personal mission to save street dogs in Romania.

According to the Associated Press (AP), the actress was traveling in Romania with her rescue dog, Kai, visiting projects set up by Vier Pfoten, an animal welfare foundation that encourages interaction between stray dogs and institutionalized people.

Swank visited the capital, Bucharest, which has more than 35,000 strays. The dog-loving actress told the AP that she believes in the healing power of stray dogs who are given a second chance.

“The unconditional love of an animal is very healing and teaches them about not just unconditional love but about a relationship, about responsibility, about anger management,” Swank said.

Swank’s recent travels inspired her to start a new charity called Hilaroo to bring needy children and animals together. The charity combines her name and that of her late dog, Karoo.

I’ve seen firsthand how it changes the path of the soul, for the animal and for the child,” she said.

Before leaving Bucharest, the actress stressed the importance of neutering unwanted dogs and cats rather than having to kill them.

“I believe in a ‘No-Kill’ policy,” she said. “Hopefully (we are) getting to a place where we have ‘No-Kill’ universally and just a more caring attitude in general to all animals.”
