Surf Dog Ricochet Wins 1st Place at Loews Surf Dog Competition

Cameron MathisonThis past weekend, Surf Dog Ricochet won first place in the large dog category at the 7th Annual Loews Surf Dog Competition in Imperial Beach, Calif.

She also won second place in the tandem division with actor Cameron Mathison and helped Scott Chandler set the Guinness World Record for 17 dogs surfing on one board.

Fans of Ricochet’s Facebook page traveled from around the country to cheer her on and watch Chandler attempt to set three new world records. With Ricochet’s help, Chandler was able to accomplish setting the records for most dogs surfing on one board at one time, most dogs surfing on one board at one time with a human and most dogs surfing on one board at one time with two humans.

Ricochet competed against nearly 50 other dogs for the first place title. Judges said Ricochet won because she was able to surf backwards all the way to shore on a couple waves. Ricochet donated her dog food prize to Star Paws Rescue in Los Angeles.

She also competed in the tandem category with Mathison, who appeared on “All My Children” and “Dancing With the Stars,” and is currently reporting for ”Good Morning America.” Mathison had only surfed three other times, but Ricochet’s background of surfing with people, kids, surf pros & other dogs made them a winning team.

This event was extra special to Ricochet because more than $10,000 was raised for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Ricochet is currently the ASPCA’s Dog of the Year, and was awarded this title for raising more than $163,000 for human and animal causes, and surfing with people with disabilities, kids with special needs and wounded warriors as an assistive aid.
