Is My Dog Sore and Swollen From a Rattlesnake Bite or Something Else?

black lab with swollen noseOur dog went with us on a ride in the desert and we don’t know if she got bitten by a rattlesnake or not.

What are the symptoms – would she be sore and swollen, but not whiny?

Hi Amber,

Thank you for your question.

If your dog is “sore and swollen but not whiny,” perhaps she has experienced some other form of trauma. Blunt trauma from a fall, insect stings, swollen joints from arthritis and other issues can cause tissues to swell.

I discuss some of the health hazards for dogs and cats associated with being outside in Outdoor Activities are Often Traumatic for Your Pet.

I hope that since you describe the symptoms as not being overly severe, your dog has not been bitten by a snake. Any concern for a rattlesnake bite merits an immediate examination by a veterinarian.

Good luck,
