Reader Rescue Story: Max, the 100-Pound Lap Dog

Happy Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! Our reader rescue story this week was submitted by Jessica Gyles. Her sweet 5-year-old black Lab, Max, wasn’t wanted by his previous owners, but he now has a loving furever home where he’s appreciated each and every day.

If you’re the pet parent of a rescued dog, we want to share your story, too! You just might inspire someone else to save a life. For information about submitting your rescue tale, click here.

black lab MaxMy boyfriend and I adopted Max a little over a year ago. My boyfriend really wanted a dog, and while I am a huge dog lover, I wasn’t sure if I wanted the responsibility of one.

However, when I laid eyes on Max, I fell in love.

Even though he had hot spots on his back, was pretty overweight and in extreme need of a bath, I knew we had to take him home.

We could tell his previous owners didn’t want him anymore – they handed him over with just his collar and leash 15 minutes after chatting with us. We wanted to create a loving home for him.

One year later, I am so happy and lucky to have him in my life. He has helped my boyfriend and I get closer, and he has also helped me grow up a lot.

We love playing, taking long walks, swimming and snuggling up on the couch with him.

Even though he’s 100 pounds and thinks he’s a lap dog, I don’t mind – anything for my best buddy. He came into my life for a reason.

I’ll never understand why his previous owners didn’t want him anymore, but I don’t care. Max is a part of our family now, and I’m so blessed because of it.
