Even though he’s 12 years old, a Border Collie named Bagels still loves to swim and chase sticks.
Bagels and his dog dad, Joe Markovitch of Vancouver, British Columbia, were visiting Kitsilano Beach last week when the Border Collie picked up a 5-foot-long stick and carried it into the water.
“Because he grabbed it at one end, the current wouldn’t allow him to turn,” Markovitch told Global News. “So he just kept swimming out to sea.”
Markovitch jumped in the water to rescue his dog. As he swam toward Bagels, he encountered another rescuer.
The Lab chomped down on one end of the stick and turned Bagels around. The two dogs swam back to the shore together.
“They literally walked out of the water with the stick in their mouths,” Markovitch said.
According to a Facebook comment, the Lab’s name is Cream Cheese.
Markovitch noted that while no one on the beach recorded the rescue, it was “truly a YouTube moment.” Last year a video of a Lab rescuing two dogs trapped in a canoe went viral on YouTube, with more than 1.4 million views.
“I haven’t seen anything like it before,” Markovitch told the Global News. “This other dog maybe even saved Bagels’ life.”
