The Westminster Dog Show has dazzled dog lovers for 134 years and this time around was no different. Hundreds of dogs from around the globe descended on New York
City to participate in one of the most respected dog shows in the world.
I Love Dogs ambassador Jo Anne Ybaben and her Papillion Dash were among those lucky enough to compete at this year’s show. Dash, who is only 2 years old, has already had an exciting and prolific show career. Like all Westminster competitors, Dash has secured the title of champion and is considered one of the finest dogs in his breed.
Ybaben was thrilled when she found out Dash would attend Westminster. “I was excited but nervous,” she said. “It’s a really big deal.”
Arriving for Westminster is not unlike arriving in New York itself—everything is an exciting whirlwind. (more…)

More than 50 dog lovers, most of them escorted by their pooches, gathered on Hotel Maya’s beautiful Luna Solstice Patio in Long Beach recently for the i Love Dogs and Hotel Maya TweetUp/Facebook MeetUp to benefit spcaLA.
Guests were asked to bring a bag of kibble to help relieve spcaLA’s dog food shortage, and did they ever deliver – a grand total of 390 pounds was donated!
Thanks to the generosity of Dogswell and the Animal Care Center of Huntington Beach, who both pledged to match the donations pound-for-pound, spcaLA will receive a whopping 1,170 pounds of dog food – more than half a ton! – for its hungry shelter pooches. (more…)

A Chihuahua has found himself in the middle of a Cinderella story, only in this story it’s a diamond collar instead of a glass slipper that’s the perfect fit.
Although members of the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) protested this year’s Westminster Dog Show under the premise that pedigree dogs take away shelter dogs’ chances of finding a forever home, in this case the opposite is true.
A few days before the show, i Love Dogs participated in the 2nd Annual PETaPOTTY Westminster Experience, one of the many events that lead up to America’s most famous dog show. Hosted by SkyBark at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City, the evening’s festivities included a fashion show that featured none other than i Love Dogs Diamonds’ exclusive diamond dog collars. Should personal information about convicted animal abusers be made available to the public, just as it is for sex offenders?
If a California bill is approved, the state will be the first in the U.S. to require adults convicted of animal cruelty felonies to register with their local police and provide their names, home addresses, places of employment and current photographs. That information, along with the offense, would be posted online. (The website pet-abuse.com currently offers a limited registry of animal abusers in the U.S.)
The bill, SB 1277, was introduced on February 19 by Dean Florez, the State Senate’s majority leader and chairman of the Food and Agriculture Committee. He wrote it with help from the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), an animal-protection group that created the website exposeanimalabusers.org to promote efforts to pass this law in other states. With President Barrack Obama’s call to increase the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan by 30,000, the need for systems to support those numbers will also increase. The estimated cost for the first year alone is approximately $30 billion.
At least a fraction of that cost seems likely to fund the need for military-trained dogs that accompany soldiers on their patrols. By all accounts, dogs trained to sniff out explosives and mines have saved countless lives in the Afghan desert, but these dogs cost a significant amount of money to train and maintain. The San Francisco Examiner reports that amount to be about $40,000 per year, per dog. (more…)
