Move over little dogs – Rottweilers, Bulldogs and Mastiffs are among the big dogs moving up the AKC’s list of the most popular breeds of 2012.

AKC-registered Old English Sheepdogs have dropped from a peak of 16,000 in 1975 to just 1,000 or so this year. Is this breed going the way of the dodo bird?

Labs, German Shepherds and Beagles were among the most popular U.S. dog breeds of 2011.

Along with Surf Dog Ricochet, last year’s winner was Wyatt, a 2 year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, who works as a service dog with his owner/handler, Janice Wolfe.

Although dogs may chew up everything in sight, they apparently don’t have to worry about getting coal in their stockings.

Four show dogs stolen along with a van were all found safe last week. Two went on to do well at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.

Thousands of show, agility and obedience dogs will be competing this weekend in Long Beach, Calif.
